Art
Intent
At Pinhoe our aim is to bring learning to life through current contexts that connects to our children’s lives - who they are, how they fit into the world and how they contribute back.
Our Art curriculum connects to elements of real life; it makes links with our year group topics that promotes thinking as a global citizen and develops creative skills that allows young people to explore their creative attributes. Through the teaching of knowledge and skills, children will learn how to apply these and express themselves in diverse Art forms. Creating a space for expression, experimentation and innovation allows children to become confident in communicating their ideas through a varied medium.
We supply children with the foundations of valuable artistic skills, which will enable further progression throughout their school years. We aim to instil the children into being critical thinkers, building on their evaluation and reflective skills when completing a range of Art projects throughout the year.
Aims
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
Teachers have the knowledge of the Arts curriculum and are supported in developing the expertise to address the gaps so that children are not disadvantaged. Consequently, children produce creative work, exploring ideas and recording their experiences through a range of activities, from first-hand experience, from their imagination, and selecting their own ideas to use in their work.
Children develop their skills in design, music, drawing (including figure drawing), painting, sculpture and other techniques through practical and exciting activities that build upon and embed key concepts learnt in previous years. The curriculum is designed to embed key skills so that children can apply them fluently throughout their primary school career.
Teachers assessment of ongoing learning and defined end points is effective, and is used to check pupils understanding to inform teaching, and to further embed knowledge and skills.
Impact
Children will be engaged in completing Art projects, closely linked to their termly Topic. They will produce high-quality art pieces, applying a range of skills, built on from previous years. Experiences for self-reflection and evaluation will inspire children to continue establishing their unique methods of expression and allow for periods of celebration in a supported class environment.
We will measure the impact of pupil’s work through the assessment of children’s work and discussions when completing evaluations and celebrating work with the class and wider school. This will be completed in accordance with the progression of skills, which can be accessed via the school website.
