Intent
At Pinhoe C of E Primary School, we would like our children to develop a love and appreciation of music that will stay with them for life. We want music teaching and learning to be enjoyable, inspiring and exciting with many opportunities for children to develop their musical potential.
The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all children:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
- be taught to sing, create and compose music
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated
Implementation
The teaching and learning of the music curriculum at Pinhoe C or E Primary School is planned using the Charanga Music Scheme. The Charanga Music Scheme follows the National Curriculum. It provides wide exposure to musical styles and genres from different times and places and promotes the exploration of the language of music through active listening, performing and composing activities.
Each unit follows a sequence of learning: listen and appraise, interrelated dimensions of music, singing, playing Instruments, improvisation, composition, perform and share. There is a clear progression of skills and knowledge to accompany each unit that sets out exactly how the children progress throughout the year and year on year.
In addition to the scheme, children are given the opportunity to learn to play musical instruments including Ocarinas, Ukuleles, Nuvo jSaxes, Djembes, Mini Steel Pans and Nuvo Doods. At Pinhoe C of E Primary School, we aim for our children to experience at least 6 different instruments during their time with us.
We also hold weekly ‘Live Lounges’ where children, who are learning an instrument, play to the rest of the school as they enter and leave the assembly. Our aim is for other children to feel inspired to take up learning an instrument.
Impact
At Pinhoe C of E Primary School, we hope our children develop a love of music and an increased understanding of the impact that music can have on their own and others’ lives. Our children should demonstrate a progression of musical knowledge and skills which they continuously build on and embed.
We will measure the impact of pupil’s work through termly teacher assessments, through discussions with children and through teaching and learning observations. We hold termly performances where parents are invited to listen to their children performing the instrument they have been learning that term.
What we have been up to!
Years 5 and 6 learnt to play the Djembe drums last term.
Years 3 and 4 are currently learning to play the Toots.
Years 4 - 6 had the opportunity to watch the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra perform at Exeter Great Hall. It was amazing and we got to singing along with them!
The choir have been holding regular performances throughout the term. We were incredibly lucky to have Rachel Smith come into school to hold a singing workshop! Rachel has worked with the National Youth Choir and Gareth Malone to name but a few!
Our Live Lounges are in full swing and enjoyed by the children every Monday assembly.
